I’m Maya.

Maya Al-Hajj, a nine-year-old girl, arrived at Rihab Zahraa Orphanage, silent and unable to speak. Whether she came from Sarafand by choice or by force is not important. What truly matters is her courage to share her story with confidence, inspiring hope in others who have faced similar challenges.
Maya had struggled with speech problems since birth and underwent several surgeries, but her condition did not improve until she joined the orphanage. She avoided talking and interacting with others because she felt deeply self-conscious. She remembers staying away from other children to avoid their constant questions, which often included hurtful comments. This affected her confidence and made her feel even more unhappy with herself.
Maya’s speech difficulties and lack of self-confidence became a primary concern for the orphanage’s caregivers, who dedicated themselves to supporting her. With their understanding and care, her condition gradually improved. Maya says, “There are still kind people in the world who stood by us, and they are a blessing from God.”
Maya’s talents remained hidden until she discovered her skills in writing poetry and prose, acting, and singing. Encouraged by those around her, she joined the orphanage’s choir, captivating listeners with her beautiful voice. This experience not only boosted her confidence but also improved her articulation. Empowered by her determination, Maya began to speak freely, no longer worried about how others perceived her speech. She even took it a step further, educating others about her condition from a scientific perspective.
At the age of 21, Maya published a book about her life and shared her story on the show “Khedni Maak” with Wissam Sabbagh and his guest, Zahi Wehbe. With a positive attitude, she cited, “This life of the world is nothing but an enjoyment, and verily, the Hereafter that is the home that will remain forever.” Maya believes people should focus on their positive energy instead of negative energy and always move forward in life.
